Adobe Photoshop Basics: A Step-by-Step Guide, 8 Minute Read
Here we will take a look at the basics for Photoshop, showing you how to use the program, along with its features. If you already have Photoshop, you may have already created several images or started a project that you are now working on. Learning Photoshop is about creating new things in the program, so we’ll begin with some of the basics before moving on to creating our own images.
How to Get Started in Photoshop
The first step is to download the free software from Adobe.com. This is Photoshop, so do not download the Photoshop Creative Cloud version. The free version does not offer all the features of the paid version, but is a good introduction to using the software. It is best to learn with a copy of Photoshop for Mac or PC.

The next step is to open Photoshop and navigate through the interface. The program looks like a large window. You’ll find the File menu, Edit menu, the tools menu, and the options menu on the left side.
The tools menu has many tools for image editing. We’ll take a look at each one.
The most basic and standard opacity (transparency) setting is 50 percent. Usually, the default setting is used when you are selecting an object to hide or an area to be transparent.
The object is not seen because it is partially hidden. The color and the object shows through in the remaining area.

The alpha channel is a special channel that holds information on how an image should be displayed. The channels are the different color elements in an image. The setting for the alpha channel is a white color.

The fill mode is an alternative to the standard opacity setting of 50 percent.
This setting is used when you want to use an object in an image where more of the surrounding area is transparent. For example, when you want to put a logo or company name on a transparent background or when you want to keep an object looking transparent over a colored background.

Hi there. I’m trying to print a scale bar on a CV and also have been trying to print a sign for direction arrows on the poster that says left, right, up and down – all with my old HP Laserjet 8500 series printer.
I tried a few things, and I don’t know if it’s because my older printer doesn’t have the latest updates or not, but some things just don’t seem to work on a particular page. The top half of the scale bar looks fine, with numbers both up and down, but it prints sideways on the bottom of the page. I have a font I would like to use (Tekton 12pt), but when I try it, it won’t show. The arrows show up fine, but looking at them in Calibri it seems to be set a little different. As a general rule the top half of the bar looks fine, but the bottom half prints with the numbers in a different font, or in a different location, even when I set the ‘Calibri’ font in the print area. And my “Font” settings always prints out as “Times New Roman”. I know I’m probably a little off track here, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello. The arrows that you want to print are not regular arrows. They are (or look like) Microsoft Word’s internal arrows (the ones that would indicate page orientation). However, your printer can print them.
I suggest two ways of printing them:
1. Use the print preview of your favourite browser to check if they look good. If they look good, then print them using the print options of your favourite browser. If they don’t look good, you may have to find some fancy software to make them look good. (I don’t know if it is possible)
2. Print them using your printer. If the above doesn’t work, then you are likely going to have to make them.
Hello, dear Annie. This is a good error and you are lucky to have a fresh start (as the first printing server I have been talking about is still having problems with Outlook

Julia Child and My Career (Or, Why I Don’t Love Husbands)
Marriage (or, I guess, love) is a funny thing — but I only realize this now that I am a married woman. At the time, I was more concerned with having a career.
I was a freshman in college, and though I had always known I wanted to be a writer, for most of my adult life I had also thought that I would remain single. I wanted to have a career in literature; I wanted to write and be a good teacher.
In 1990, I won a writing fellowship to attend the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and I was ecstatic to go; it was my first year away from home. I was taken aback by the campus, and after a few days I decided to move into the dorms. So I did.
In my senior year, I had the opportunity to spend a semester at a posh campus in northern Italy — to study fiction writing and language, to work with other writers in a hotbed of creativity. I chose to go.
After that, I went back to finishing my degree, and then I came home to New York City and to teaching.
That fall, I got a part-time job at the New York Times, and that was where I worked for 15 years. I started as a reporter and then moved into the education department, becoming an education columnist, and eventually I left for a time to write a book — the memoir about my family and myself that inspired my stage show.
When I was 30, I married my husband, who is also a writer and a teacher. I never, ever, ever wanted to be married. I wanted to be a writer, and I wanted to be a good teacher, and I knew that one day I’d be a good writer and a good teacher, but not both.
Now I have a husband and a house and a baby and a crazy job as a host of a TV show about cooking. I have a good job; I am being supported. I am a successful, single woman. I am a wife and mother. I am married.
I am Julia — I am Julia Child.
I have always been happy. I have always been a good daughter, a good sister, and a good friend, and I have always been an amateur chef, and now a professional chef. I am a writer
