# Choosing an image for HDR

To create a HDR image, your first step is to find an image that you want to use in your HDR photography. You want to find an image that has several layers of exposure, including highlights, middle tones, and shadows. You also want to be careful to avoid capturing image data that will lead to blocked shadows or blown highlights, so you make sure the light in the scene is even and well-defined.

HDR images are often taken with a tripod or at least a sturdy surface to support the camera. There are a few image-editing techniques that help you create an image with a greater depth of tone, so before you shoot, look through the image on the monitor and think about what those techniques can bring to your image. For example, you may want to use a graduated filter to better lighten areas in the shadows. You can use a stipple brush to create a soft-focus look. And you can use a vignette filter to create the look of a film negative.

The next step is to record the image with your camera. Create a RAW file and then import the image into your computer. (See “Importing a RAW image into Lightroom,” later in this chapter, for instructions.)

Planner Mag is a popular magazine for women about personal planning and fashion. Recently the magazine was redesigned by Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam. The previous design received mixed reactions.

Before beginning, make sure to have in mind the logo and the color palette of the magazine. In this tutorial, we’ll start from scratch with the new design and recreate it.

Note: the first photo is the current version and the second one is a preview of the new design.

Step 1: Open Planner Mag in Photoshop Elements

Open Planner Mag in Photoshop Elements.

Step 2: Create a new document

Create a new document by clicking File > New.

Step 3: Set up the artboard

Set the artboard to 3600×3600.

Step 4: Using the white background

Highlight the white background and use this option to set the white as the background color (top right option), even if the previous artboard is selected:

Step 5: Laying out the page

Go to View > Artboards, and rename it ‘LAYOUT’.

Select LAYOUT and go to Edit > Preferences > Artboards. Here, we want to create four copies.

Step 6: Making the logo

The current logo is a.png image at 50% size, it will be enough for us to copy and paste it in the artboard.

Click on File > Place.

Click on Browse and select the.png file.

Click on Open. The logo appears in the artboard.

Hold down CTRL and click on the logo, to enlarge it to the original size. If you do so, you will have to unlock the elements from the previous steps, so you can edit them again.

Step 7: Making the grid

Now we want to resize the current artboard in order to make a custom grid.

Click on Image > Canvas Size.

In Canvas Size, change the width and height to match the canvas size (the 4 artboards x 4 artboards = 3600×3600).

In that way, you will have a grid which is the same size as the artboards.
