Zenith has launched three new Chronomaster Open models at Watches & Wonders, reducing the case to a more versatile size and equipped with the latest El Primero Caliber 3600 high-frequency automatic movement. Introduced in 2003, the Chronomaster Open featured an open heart-shaped design, a first for a chronograph, and highlighted Zenith’s high-beat (5Hz) movement on the front. The dial has been redesigned and skeletonized to reveal the entire balance and escapement, and the redesigned caliber 3600 has been skeletonized to better showcase both. These new Chronomaster Open watches replace the previous 42mm variant, which is now discontinued.
The case is 39.5mm in diameter and 13.1mm thick (45.2mm lug-to-lug), which is more wearable for most wrists. There are two stainless steel models with black or silver dials, and a rose gold model with a silver dial. The new case design is nearly identical to last year’s Chronomaster Sport, with the same crown, pushers and case, but without the protruding ceramic bezel. The dial is an evolution of the original Chronomaster Open from 2003, with multiple cutouts showing the balance, escapement and small seconds gear. The new in-house Caliber El Primero 3604 self-winding movement has 35 jewels, beats at 5Hz (36,000vph), and has a power reserve of 60 hours. This is a slight refinement of the latest caliber 3600, with a few aesthetic tweaks to clearly see the silicon escapement and balance wheel on the dial side. Viewed from the back of the showcase, in the center is the hollow oscillating weight with the Zenith star logo, and the blue column wheel is clearly visible. Zenith marks its partnership with Extreme E, the electric car rally championship, with this exciting chronograph.
The Defy Extreme name has a different meaning than it did the last time it was used. To be fair, it’s also spelled differently. Fifteen years ago, Defy Xtreme pushed the boundaries of luxury extreme sports watches. It’s brash and bold, but it has charm. Zenith’s latest Defy Extreme, note the extra ‚E‘, intends to follow up in this regard, although its focus is more on horological extremes than wild designs.

This half is hand-wound and available on demand only. While extremely fast and precise, the power reserve is short. Luckily, Zenith puts a power reserve indicator on the dial for you. This is indeed a caliber that rivals an Extreme E championship car.
